QTIS 600 A Clear Winner
Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association (TBQA) President, Bob Frappell, has rated the inaugural QTIS 600 sale on the Gold Coast a huge success for breeders, vendors and buyers alike.
Mr Frappell said vendors were thrilled and surprised by the large crowd that attended on both days (March 29 & 30), and it was clear that all the marketing and promotions in the months leading up to the event had paid off.
Queensland Racing, Magic Millions, TBQA and Aushorse had all contributed financially to the intensive marketing campaign.
“I particularly want to thank Aushorse for their large contribution,” said Mr Frappell.
“On the whole the QTIS 600 promotion was very well managed and achieved all the goals Magic Millions and Queensland Racing were aiming for.”
Mr Frappell said the large contingent of Country buyers played an integral role in the success of the sale.
“Many buyers from the Country areas were prepared to buy Queensland horses which put a bottom in the market, and if the vendors were prepared to meet that market, they sold.”
Queensland Racing Limited Racing Services Manager, Paul Brennan, said QRL was overjoyed by the result, and providing assistance to Queensland breeders, but this event will also increase future participation in the racing industry.
“Country people have bought over 100 horses which will increase the emphasis on two year old racing in regional areas,” Mr Brennan said.
The 468 lots had an average sale price of $18,400 with a clearance rate of 81%. There was a catch for vendors however, they needed to be prepared to let their horses go possibly for less than were worth. Mr Frappell said the key was to start low and let the market find its level.
He said although some breeders may be disappointed with the prices they got, he would hate to imagine how they would have faired without the QTIS 600 promotional strategy.
“The alternative would have been very bleak given the economic tsunami that’s about to hit. Through QTIS 600 we were able to convince people to spend. I’m sure that without this promotion it would have been a devastating sale for vendors. ”
Mr Frappell wants to assure breeders and buyers that this is just the start of bigger and better things in the years to come. TBQA, Magic Millions and Queensland Racing will now collate various data surrounding the marketing campaign to fine tune and enhance their direction for QTIS 600, 2010.
